About English River First Nation
A proud Dene Nation and member of the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, known for a bold and collaborative spirit, self-sufficiency and a deep connection to the land
Des Nëdhë́'iné: English River First Nation (Denesuline: Des Nëdhë́'iné) means "People of the Great River," a name that honours the Churchill River. Our Nation is a Treaty 10 Nation, and Chief William Apesis signed the treaty on August 28, 1906.
Population: Our Nation has 1,833 members, the most recent figure available, with members living both on and off reserve.
Location: Our territory lies in the boreal forest of the Canadian Shield along the Churchill River. We have nineteen reserves, including our home reserves of Wapachewunak, near the Churchill River, and La Plonge, on the Beaver River. Our band office is in Patuanak, about 5.5 hours north of Saskatoon.
Culture: The river continues to support fishing, hunting and gathering, and faith and community gatherings remain an important part of life. Through Des Nedhe Group, our economic and employment development company, and partnerships in forestry and mining, we create opportunities for our members.
